What is the timing for the CBSE Class 10 Math exam?

The CBSE Class 10 Math exam will take place in the morning session in an offline, pen-and-paper format. Students will have 3 hours to complete the exam, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM (IST).

Before the exam begins, 15 minutes will be given to read the question paper carefully.

How to Use the First 15 Minutes of Reading Time Wisely

The first 15 minutes before the exam are crucial, so use them wisely. Quickly scan the question paper and sort questions into easy, manageable, and tricky ones. Start with easy and formula-based questions to build confidence. Decide on optional questions in advance to avoid confusion. Leave tricky questions for the end after finishing the simpler ones. This approach helps save time and stay focused during the exam.

How to Manage Your 3 Hours During an Exam

The key to handling your exam time well is to stay calm, focused, and confident. Don’t panic when you receive the question paper. Take a deep breath, believe in yourself, and aim to attempt all the questions.

  • First 15 Minutes: Read & Plan

Use the first 15 minutes to carefully read and understand the question paper. Identify the questions you’re most confident about and plan your approach.

  • First Hour: Answer the Easy Ones

Start with the questions you find easiest, like multiple-choice (MCQs) and short-answer (2-mark) questions. These take less time and help you gain confidence.

  • Second Hour: Attempt the Manageable Questions

Move on to questions that require formulas, steps, or a structured approach. In subjects like math, steps and formulas carry marks, so write them clearly even if you’re unsure of the final answer.

  • Third Hour: Focus on High-Scoring Questions

Now, attempt the long-answer questions that carry the most marks. Start with the one you know best and then complete the rest. Manage your time wisely to attempt all questions.

  • Improve Your Speed & Accuracy

Practice previous years' question papers to improve speed and get familiar with question patterns. This will help you stay confident and perform better during the actual exam. By following this strategy, you can maximize your marks and make the most of your exam time.

The Format of CBSE Class 10 Math Exam!

The CBSE Class 10 Math exam is out of 80 marks and includes MCQs, short-answer, and long-answer questions. In addition to the written exam, CBSE also conducts internal assessments worth 20 marks. These assessments include periodic tests, notebook submissions, and activities like lab work or project presentations.

Since these 20 marks are added to the final grade, doing well in internal assessments is just as important as the main exam.

With Class 10 exams approaching, start early to prepare better.

  • Know the syllabus. Identify important chapters that carry more marks.
  • Understand Concepts: Focus on learning the logic instead of just memorizing.
  • Practice Regularly: Solve NCERT questions and previous years' papers.
  • Manage Your Time: Set aside specific time slots for each subject.
  • Take Mock Tests: Practice full-length exams with a timer to improve speed and accuracy.
  • Make Short Notes: Write down important formulas and common mistakes to avoid.
  • Focus on Important Chapters: Give extra time to topics with higher weightage.
  • Revise Daily: Go over formulas, equations, and diagrams every day.
  • Practice a Mock Test daily. Attempt one full test daily to build confidence.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in the Math Exam

  • Many students rush through calculations, which often leads to mistakes. Always work step by step and double-check numbers to avoid errors.
  • For 5-mark questions, forgetting to draw required diagrams can cost valuable marks. Also, not highlighting the final answer can make it harder for the examiner to find.
  • Another common mistake is not mentioning the formula or theorem used. Even if the final answer is correct, missing this step can result in losing marks.

To avoid these errors, keep your answers structured, clear, and well-organized.
