CBSE has decided to implement a uniform system of assessments and examination patterns for classes 6 to 8. 

The CBSE has implemented a grading system for students in Classes 6 to 8 to promote a more comprehensive and stress-free evaluation process. The grading system is based on the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) model, which focuses on scholastic and co-scholastic aspects of a student's development.

According to the assessment structure and examination pattern, the session is divided into two terms: TERM-I and TERM-II

What is the grading system for class 6 to 8?

A student’s overall performance is assessed through scholastic (academic) and co-scholastic (non-academic) areas.

Scholastic Performance 

For scholastic subjects, grades are given using an 8-point scale given below the table.

  • Grade A1 represents the highest achievement, while Grade E is the lowest. If a student scores below Grade D, they will have the chance to take a compartment exam to improve their score and qualify for the next class.

Co-scholastic Performance

Students will be evaluated in co-scholastic areas based on the following:

  • Work Education: Skill-based activities that encourage hands-on learning.
  • Art Education: Includes both visual and performing arts.
  • Health and Physical Education: Activities like sports, martial arts, and fitness.
  • Discipline: Focuses on attendance, sincerity, behavior, values, personal grooming, respect for rules, and attitude towards society, the nation, and others.

Co-scholastic areas will be graded using a 3-point scale

What is the student's promotion policy?

  1. No Overall Grading

    • The overall grade for all subjects combined will not be calculated.
  2. Promotion Criteria

    • To move to the next class, students must score at least 33% in each subject, both in the final examination and the cumulative score.
    • If a student scores less than 33% in one subject in the final exam, they will be eligible for a compartment exam.
    • If a student scores less than 33% in two or more subjects, they will have to repeat the class.
  3. Compartment Exam

    • To be promoted, students must score at least 33% in the compartment exam for the subject they failed.
    • The compartment exam syllabus will be the same as the final exam.
    • Students get only one chance to pass the compartment exam. No second attempt will be allowed under any circumstances, including medical issues.
  4. Unfair Means

    • Any student caught using unfair methods during an exam will receive a zero in that subject.
